Meticulously researched, North Clare's Fight for Irish Freedom tells the story of the quest for Irish liberty and land ownership, from the activities of the United Irishmen at the turn of the 19th century to the War of Independence in 1920/21. The active pursuit of land reform and detailed accounts of the land grabbing cases in Ballygastel (Lisdoonvarna) and Annfield (Kilshanny) at the end of the 19th century are described.
Fenian influences led to the establishment of a tenacious Irish Republican Brotherhood presence in the area, culminating in a strong and determined Volunteer Movement, organised in the 4th, 5th and 6th Battalions of the Mid Clare Brigade of the IRA, whose activities resulted in significant encounters with the Royal Irish Constabulary, Black and Tans, and British Military.
The book describes the courage and endevour of the many men and women in North Clare whose bravery and self-sacrifice, played a significant part in achieving the freedom we enjoy today.
