Tommy McCarthy was born in 1941 in the civil parish of Kilmurry McMahon, in West Clare. This book contains the transcripts of extensive oral history recordings made of Tommy.
He recalls what life was like in rural Ireland in the last century, and gives a history of athletics in the country - a sport he is passionate about and has dedicated much of his life to. A selection of photographs, both old and new, accompany the text. Haymaking, turf-cutting, marquee dancing, local traditions, sport meetings, races, local athletes, and many more subjects are recalled.
