In A Man of Many Places the author, a retired solicitor and public notary, better known for his contributions to the literature of the law, changes the genre of his writing to produce a biography that unfolds gems of Irish history heretofore unwritten and episodes of his long life that may, at times, have the reader in tears of laughter or compassion.
The author allows the reader to accompany him as a silent observer as he retraces his steps through early childhood in Donegal and later in Ennis, his adolescence, his formative years at St. Flannan’s College, Ennis, his making a career choice and his later life as a solicitor in Ennis, Waterford City and Dublin.
The book is written in an unsophisticated style, bereft of legalese but full of humour delivered through the many anecdotes which the author supplies in many chapters. These are assured to have the reader laughing quietly to himself or herself, for it is a book that is not gender orientated.
The book may be small by comparison with others of that genre but is comprehensive in the essentials. It will prove itself a welcome companion for the weary traveller or the reader whom sleep eludes.
